The match began with Griekspoor taking an early lead, breaking Zverev to go up 3-0 in the first set. However, Zverev mounted a strong comeback, turning the tide to claim the opening set 6-4. As the second set commenced, Griekspoor quickly found himself a break down, and it soon became evident that he was struggling with a physical issue that prevented him from continuing the contest.

Griekspoor later revealed the nature of his injury, explaining, "This morning and in the warmup with the last couple of serves that I hit, I pulled my abdominal." He added that this was his first experience with such an injury, though he recognized the feeling from previous muscle strains. Despite a pre-match scan showing nothing—likely due to the immediacy of the injury—Griekspoor attempted to play. "Felt actually okay in the first set even though I didn’t serve harder than 180 and went all the way down to 150 at some point," he noted. "I just want to give it a shot, but yeah, realized pretty early that it was not going to be my day."
