Tuchel announces England squad, Toney is back after Euro 2024

Ivan Toney has returned to the England national team setup for the first time since last summer’s European Championship, capping off a triumphant comeback to elite football. The 29-year-old striker has earned a recall after a standout debut campaign with Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli, where his goalscoring prowess was instrumental in their run to win the Asian Champions League earlier this month.

Since making the high-profile move to Saudi Arabia in August 2024, Toney has hit remarkable form, netting 29 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions. His consistency and impact in the final third have not gone unnoticed by new England manager Thomas Tuchel, who included the forward in his latest squad selection. England will face Andorra in a World Cup qualifier in Barcelona on June 7, followed by a friendly against Senegal at Nottingham’s City Ground on June 10.

Toney’s return to international duty is a testament to his resilience following a turbulent period. After rising to prominence with Brentford—where he scored 72 goals in 141 appearances and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League—he faced an eight-month suspension for breaching betting regulations. His comeback in January 2024 was gradual, with four goals in 17 league appearances to close out the season, but the move to Al Ahli reignited his form.

Capped six times for England, Toney made his national team debut in March 2023 and was part of the squad for Euro 2024. One of his most memorable contributions came in the round of 16, where he assisted Harry Kane’s extra-time winner against Slovakia.
Toney joins a potent forward line alongside Kane, Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins, and Eberechi Eze. Other notable names in the selection include Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Reece James, while the defensive unit features talents such as Levi Colwill, Ezri Konsa, and Kyle Walker, who is currently on loan at AC Milan.
